The Retreat

We built four cabins and left the rest of the woods alone.

Spruce & Birch began as a woodlot nobody had logged in fifty years. We put in four small buildings, a sauna, six miles of footpath, and stopped there on purpose.

There is no restaurant, no front desk, and no schedule. Bread and specialty coffee arrive at your door each morning; everything else is up to you.

More about the stay
Lamplight and steam inside the cedar sauna

The sauna

Wood-fired and cedar-lined, reserved in one-hour blocks so the room is always yours alone. An hour is long enough to stop thinking about the week you came from, and the stove is lit before you arrive.

Cedar cold plunge barrel steaming on the deck outside the dark timber sauna

The cold plunge

A cedar barrel on the deck just outside the sauna door, spring-fed and kept somewhere near fifty degrees all year. Fifteen seconds is plenty the first time, and nobody is watching if you skip it.

Breakfast basket with sourdough, jam, and freshly ground single-origin coffee

Morning Bread and Coffee

A basket at your door before eight: sourdough from the bakery in town, butter, and last summer's jam. Beside it, single-origin beans ground that morning, Ethiopian this season, and a pour-over kit.

Guests

We slept nine hours a night, which has not happened since our first child. The bread at the door is a small thing that feels enormous.

Renee & Paul H. · Two nights in Hollow

Booked Ridge for our anniversary expecting a nice view. Did not expect to sit on that deck for four hours without saying much.

Dana W. · Three nights in Ridge

Our kids claimed the loft in Spruce within about nine seconds. It rained the whole weekend and nobody minded.
